I purchased a money order in 1989. The person I paid claims he never received the payment and wants proof of payment. Can I obtain proof showing the money order was cashed and paid? I have the money order receipt, but the receipt does not prove it was actually cashed by this person.
In most cases you can contact the money order company who paid it and receive proof that it was cashed. You should have enough information with the receipt, and as a pack rat, hats off to you! Having a receipt from 20 years ago is astonishing. The worry at this point is that the money order company will no longer have records. If that is the case, tell the person to whom it was originally given that the copy isn't available and requesting proof after twenty years is simply not reasonable. As a bank debt, in most states it would not be collectible after that period of time.
