Money Order from Bought Out Banks: What to do?

I recently found a "Home Savings of America" money order that I bought and made out to myself to deposit in another account, but misplaced it. It is from 1997, but Home was taken over by WAMU, which is now taken over by Chase, although there are still some Home offices. What I can do?

Start by contacting one of the Home offices or a Chase office, explain what you've found, and ask if the money order is still outstanding on the bank's books. If so, take it to one of those offices to cash it or exchange it for a current money order.

For a money order that's twelve years old, however, it's much more likely that at some point, one of the banks surrendered the funds represented by the money order to the state under Abandoned Property Laws. You can start a search to see if there is a record of surrendered funds in your name at www.missingmoney.com where you will also find links to the individual state offices that manage Abandoned Property, along with contact information for those offices.
