Reimbursement for Stale Money Order

I have a stale money order that I purchased in 2004. Due to family dynamics, the money order was taken and later returned anonymously in my mail box without an envelope. It was for a payment for a bill and never used for the reason intended because of the family theft. When I found it in my mail box, I took it back to the place of purchase for replacement or reimbursement. I was told that they no longer use that particular money order company and could not replace it or refund it. I then called the 800 number on the back of the money order and was told I would have to pay a $15.00 shipping/handling fee as well as losing $25.00, because it was past due. If I agreed to that, it would leave me with $10.00 instead of the amount purchased, $50.00. It seems to me that the original amount should be honored not just for the reason it happened to me, but also it seems this money order company just wants to make money off of my circumstances. This just doesn't sit right with me. There has got to be some other solution that enables me to retrieve the actual amount of said money order!

We can't comment on the terms of the money order and your agreement with them when the purchase was made in 2004. If they charged a fee for processing it, you have three options, do nothing and lose it all, process it with them and lose $40, or consider seeking assistance through the Better Business Bureau to see if they can work on your behalf to have the fees waived.
