Could that cashier's check be counterfeit?

Sold something over the Internet or through a classified ad lately?
Signed up for a new job where you work from home?
Received a letter telling you that you've won big in a foreign lottery?
Gotten an email promising big bucks to you if you'll help get money that's trapped in an account in another part of the world?

Be very careful. Your chances of receiving a counterfeit cashier's check in any of these situations is high, and often the scammers will have you deposit the item and give part of the cash back to them. By the time your bank discovers the deposited item was bogus, the scammer is long gone and you're on the hook for the full amount of the counterfeit check.

In this podcast, John Burnett and Mary Beth Guard bring you up to date on the recent explosion of counterfeit cashier's checks and help you understand how to avoid becoming a victim.
