Wants Credit Card: Need Checking Account?

Can a bank require me to open a checking account before they will give me a credit card?

Yes. Banks are allowed to require that you have one type of a traditional account in order to qualify for another. They can't require that you get nontraditional products from them, such as insurance or brokerage services, to qualify for a loan or deposit account though. There is a law, the Bank Tying Act, that allows this.
