I recently closed my checking account as I am unemployed and broke. I have auto-payments scheduled that I have not been able to resolve with the companies. These are not for items purchased. The bank states they will re-open the account if these charges come through. They are just re-opening the account to charge a return checkfee and an overdraft fee and then an additional overdraft fee every two days. This is what was just done. I took the last of my money to pay the bank. I know I have two other auto withdrawals on this account. Are they allowed to do this? It is going to be the death of me.
You have a right to demand that the automatic payments be discontinued, and that your bank (or former bank) refuse them. Give the companies notice in writing (certified mail or other proof of delivery is wise) that your earlier authorization for EFT payments from your account is revoked, and give a copy to the bank. If the bank allows another payment to post from your account after that, you can demand reimbursement for the payment and any fees, including overdraft fees, caused by it.
