Suddenly Account Frozen! What now?

I have banked with my bank since '94. Within the last week they have frozen my checking account with no notice, held a recent deposit of a local check with no notice, and there is pretty much silence on their end except to say that they are investigating it, because I write a lot of checks to Publix. I have been cashing checks there for years, more than lately I guess. How long can this process last? Can they just not notify me of anything right now and leave me in dark? I need money out of my account. There are ample funds to cover all of my transactions, but they are not paying any of them.

Contact the bank and ask for a reasonable date by which you can expect to have your balances released. If the bank closes your accounts (as they may), get its assurance it won't be filing any negative report with ChexSystems or other credit reporting agencies, unless the bank actually finds something reportable. The fact that the bank doesn't like you cashing checks at the supermarket isn't reason to file a negative report.

There are probably lots of banks in Florida that will be happy to have your business. You might consider making your withdrawals at the bank or its ATMs rather than at the grocery store.
