ID Needed to Cash Check

How many forms, and what kind of ID is a bank allowed to require to cash a payroll check drawn on itself? Isn't a Massachusetts ID and driver's license sufficient?

There are no restrictions on a bank's policy for required documentation of identity when cashing checks. A bank has a legal responsibility to its depositor not to cash a check drawn on the depositor's account unless the bank is assured of the identity of the individual presenting it. A bank's policy regarding adequate identification is based on its experience, and often tends to get more stringent when the bank's been burned by fraudulent identification in the recent past. It's not a reflection on the individual attempting to cash a check; it's simply an attempt at protection from losses.
