Government Claim Debits My Account: What?

I have a debit from my account that only identifies itself as a goverment claim for refund. Nothing else is known. I have my bank researching this transaction, but I want to know why it was not flagged coming in, as it was not through a debit card, but a routing and account number.

The Treasury Department has many reasons for processing claims for refunds. A government agency could have notified the Treasury that a check payee died before qualifying for a payment (such as Social Security, for example), or there may have been a claim entered that an endorsement on a check was invalid or that a check was lost. and traced to your bank. It's also possible that the bank erred in processing a claim to your account (similar names, misread account number, etc.)

It would not be helpful to speculate on what may have happened in your case, since there are no specifics concerning the transaction. You've acted correctly in asking the bank for an explanation.
