I recently did a withdrawal from my account. I used a withdrawal form provided by the bank inside the building. The withdrawal of $55.00 did not show up for two days, and when it did it was for $85.00.
I called the bank. I was sure they only gave me the $55.00. They said that I wrote fifty-five on the longhand line, but placed the numbers eighty-five on the number line. After getting a copy of my withdrawal slip, I found that I did not write eighty-five on the number line and that my signature had crossed into that area, but the written longhand was clearly $55.00. The teller got very ornery and insisted that she had given me $85.00, even though it was four days earlier and this is a very busy branch. I do not agree, and think the bank should refund my money. If there was a question about the amount, why did the teller not ask me to redo the withdrawal slip or ask for clarification? Why did it take two days to show up on my account when these type of withdrawals usually show up online immediately? What are my options at this point?
Take your complaint to the branch manager or regional manager. Point out the fact that the slip was written for $55 and that, if the numeric amount and the amount in words didn't agree, the teller should have questioned you or gone with the amount in words.
In the future, take a moment to review any withdrawal slip to be sure you haven't run your signature into other areas of the slip to make them harder to read accurately, and that the dollar amount is crystal clear. Then verify the amount of cash you obtain before leaving the teller window.
