I endorsed a check payable to me by writing "For Deposit" over my signature and entering my account number below my signature. I made out the deposit slip with a lesser amount of cash back to me and the balance to be deposited in my account. The bank cashier refused the endorsement saying I could not get cash back with the "For Deposit" restriction. I have done this many times at many different banks over the years - as recently as the day before at the same branch of the same bank. I understand that if I had written "For Deposit Only" I could not receive cash back. Who's right?
This is really a bank policy matter, not a matter of who is right and who is wrong. Where there is a real problem, though, is when two tellers of the same bank (and worse, at the same branch) don't seem to be singing from the same songbook!
Since you've received inconsistent treatment at the bank, get the bank's position clarified by speaking with the branch manager or teller supervisor. Ask specifically what the bank's policy is with respect to the form of endorsement and cash back on deposits. Explain that you've received two different responses or reactions at the same office. Then plan accordingly to ensure you aren't caught by surprise again.
