Reversing Charge for Lack of Funds

I deposited $5,000 in my account on the same day that a debit came in for $4,300 against it. The bank paid the debit but charged me $34. I am assuming that the bank was using the balance from the previous day which was insufficient.

Should I still be charged the $34 even though I technically had the funds in my account? Is there anything I can do to reverse this charge?

Your bank appears to have a specific order of posting transactions, and you should be aware of it in case anything like this situation comes up again. Ask the bank to clarify why the fee was imposed in this case.

As far as reversing the charge, ask whether the bank might make an exception for a first-time event. The worst that can happen is for the bank to refuse.
