I was recently in the hospital and incurred some debt, and have been paying off the $400 I owe at $50 dollars a month. The problem is, each month I call and pay with my debit card and I do not have a system set up for the creditors to withdraw from my account each month. This past week I authorized another $50, but when I checked my account, they had withdrawn $50 one day and another $50 again on the next. I did not authorize for the second withdrawal, is that legal?
It's incorrect to charge your account twice for one authorization, unless you have given the creditor authorization for multiple transfers. If you bank in the U.S., you can make an error claim on that second charge. The bank will have time to investigate your claim before it decides whether to reimburse you. Keep a careful record of the amounts you have paid on the debt.
