Partly-opened Checking Account - for Real?

I partly opened a checking account online. I gave my social security number, and then when it came to the last part, it said that I needed to deposit money. I wasn't able and I closed the page. Did I fully open a checking account and am I liable to pay the money?

Opening an account online is often a two- or three-step process. In this case, one of the steps is to make the initial deposit. Online banks have lots of experience with what you experienced. What usually happens is that the account is placed into a pending status, awaiting the opening deposit. If the deposit isn't received within a defined number of days, the pending account is purged.

Since you didn't complete the steps to open the account, you aren't liable for anything. If you need confirmation, look on the bank's website for a customer contact link or email address and ask whether the account is open or pending and what will happen if you don't fund it within a reasonable time.
