It's difficult to make a general statement of what seniors might be looking for, because there are wide differences in the circumstances of bank customers. Some may have adequate resources for a comfortable retirement; others may barely be eking out an existence. Some seniors have close family nearby; others have no family connections. Some have a support group of many friends; others are very much on their own, so the banking needs of seniors can vary tremendously.
Some seniors may seek out discounts on typical bank services, such as free checking accounts, with no or minimal fees for ATM or online banking. An increasing number of seniors appreciate the convenience of ATM and online banking, particularly as web browsers have made displaying larger text sizes easier. At the same time, seniors continue to appreciate friendly, cheerful bank tellers and platform staff.
Bankers who are trained to recognize signs of senior financial abuse or fraud can be invaluable in helping seniors avoid being duped by strangers -- or even, sadly, family members -- out to take money from them. Such bankers often have to tread carefully, because the same seniors they are trying to protect can be very resentful of the sometime necessary intervention, at least at the time.
