Wire Money with a Driver's License?

I am out of town and do not have a bank account. My mother wants to send me money from her bank to another bank in another state. Can they do it, and I pick the money up with my driver's license?

Before your mother does anything, you'll have to do some legwork at your end to identify where the funds should be sent. You may be able to find a bank in your area that would agree to accept a wire transfer for a non-customer, but the number of banks that do so is becoming smaller and smaller. Accepting such wire transfers presents security and other challenges for a bank, so you may have a hard time finding one that will agree.

If you cannot find a bank in your area that will accept a wire transfer for you, you may be able to identify a Western Union or other money transfer service that will accommodate you. If you have difficulty finding one, contact some check-cashing businesses in the vicinity, since they often handle money transfers, too.

If you can identify a bank or service that may be available, make sure you show them your driver's license before your mother sends the money, to ensure that you'll meet the receiving bank or service's ID requirements. It would be a real problem to find out too late that the money is waiting for you and you can't claim it! Also, check out the fee schedule. You may find out that wiring this money is a very expensive transaction.
