Finding if there are Funds behind Checks

I have eight checks from the same friend totaling $1,890. I originally loaned her money and she said she would occasionally give me checks to pay me back, but that she would let me know when she had sufficient funds in her account for me to cash them. She keeps delaying the when she can pay me back and some of the checks are now over six months old. Can I take these checks to her bank and find out if there are sufficient funds to cash them? What are my other options?

You could attempt to call the bank and give them the total of the checks you are holding, but you are less likely to get information that way (many banks have stopped verifying checks by telephone).

Be aware that the bank may refuse to honor checks that are over six months old, even if there is enough money in the account to cover them. You may have to ask your friend to replace them.
