Thinking Ahead on Bank Check Purchase

I'm buying a vehicle from an individual that is out of town. I have the option not to purchase based on my inspection. I will pay via a bank check, but if the inspection does not work out, I don't want to have a problem getting the funds re-deposited. Can I have the bank check payee be: "[Seller's Name] or [My Name]"?

Ask the bank from whom you want to purchase the check how it prefers the check to be drawn, and how to return it to your account if you don't go through with the deal. Every bank has a procedure for handling bank checks that aren't used by the purchaser. Just ask yours how it wants you to handle it.
