My brother lives in another state and is purchasing something from me. Is it possible for him to wire the money to my account even though my bank doesn't exist in his area? If so how does he go about doing this?
Yes, certainly. Your brother will need two numbers from the bottom of one of your checks. The first is the bank routing number. On a personal check, that's the nine-digit number printed in machine-legible characters starting at the left bottom corner.
The second number is your checking account number. On a personal check, that's the next group of digits, but it does not include the four-digit check number that follows it.
Verify with your bank that you have the correct numbers before you provide the information to your brother, because an error could mean your money goes to the wrong bank or account. Your brother can take the information to his bank and ask for a wire transfer to your account at your bank. There will be a fee at both the sending and receiving banks.
