My boyfriend is incarcerated and I have power of attorney. I have a payroll check from his last employer, but neither of us has a bank account, nor can we get one right now, and have always used the check cashing store near our home. They will not cash it. I have tried two or three banks, and all have said that they will only cash it if one of us is an account holder. What can I do?

You don't have many options. Contact the bank that the check is drawn on if it's within reasonable driving distance to explain the problem and ask whether that bank will cash the check based on your power of attorney.
Your chances aren't very good of getting the check cashed without a bank account or access to a check cashing business. The fact that you aren't the actual payee is a problem for any business you approach to cash the check.
One other avenue would be to contact a friend or relative with a bank account. He or she might be willing to cash the check or deposit it and give you the cash. However, adding another endorser to this situation isn't an idea that pleases banks or check cashing businesses. If your friend's jail term isn't too long, it may be that you and he will have to wait until he's out.
