Transferring an IRA

My bank has notified me of a new fee for transferring a matured IRA to another institution. Can I transfer my IRA to another bank before it matures and avoid the fee? If I do transfer it, what will that mean in terms of interest and fees?

The fee is being charged by your bank. The fee disclosure they provided to you may not be as specific as you'd like. In this case, it would be best to call and ask your bank when a specific fee will be imposed.

It may well be that the fee you describe is one charged only when the IRA is matured and moved, but there may be a separate fee of a similar or different amount for an unmatured IRA. The amounts may vary based on the value of the IRA and on your ability to take a distribution from it.
