My dad died in May and my mom recently found out that he still had a safe deposit box in the bank near his old office. She is elderly, lives quite far from the bank, and it would be difficult for her to get there and open it. Is there any way they would allow me to open it?
Normally, a box can be accessed by the personal representative of the deceased's estate (the executor or administrator). If no personal representative has been named and approved by the probate court, the bank may be able to permit access to the box for the sole purpose of looking for a Will.
State laws and bank policies on access vary widely. Contact the bank to ask what, if anything, it can do for you.
