Giving Someone a Key

I've had quite a few health problems recently, due to diabetes, so I gave my son the key to my safe deposit box and told him the box number and bank. Will he be able to get into my box if the need arises?

No. Your contract with the bank names you as the sole renter. Unless you appoint a deputy or give your son a Power of Attorney that would allow him to enter your box, your bank is bound by contract to allow only you to enter the box, even if you've given someone else a key. You could talk to your bank about appointing your son as a deputy on your box or, in the alternative, adding him as a co-renter. As it stands, however, the key won't do him any good.
