Uses for a Safe Deposit Box

When I opened my new account yesterday, the bank gave me free rent on a safe deposit box for a year. What could I keep in a safe deposit box?

The list of items you could keep in a safe deposit box is limited only by its size, your imagination, and any contract terms that might prohibit certain items (like explosives, live animals, or things that stink). Here is a list of items individuals and businesses have been known to store in safe deposit boxes. Perhaps some of these will be things you would want to keep in your own box:
  • Corporate documents, such as certificates of incorporation and minute books
  • Computer diskettes
  • Computer backup tapes
  • stocks
  • bonds
  • mortgages
  • birth certificates
  • family records
  • marriage certificates
  • trust papers
  • U.S. Savings Bonds
  • certificates of deposit
  • wills
  • trust papers
  • vehicle titles
  • insurance policies (including title insurance, home insurance, life insurance, car insurance, credit life, personal property insurance, records of annuities, etc.)
  • bank records
  • jewelry
  • adoption papers
  • citizenship papers
  • rare coins
  • baseball cards or other collectibles
  • stamp collections
  • letters
  • medals
  • photographs
  • service records
  • social security records
  • souvenirs
  • stock certificates
  • mortgage papers
  • credit records
  • passports
  • divorce papers
  • drivers' license numbers, credit card numbers
  • master list indicating the location of important documents and names and address of personal and legal advisors
  • any deeds or mortgages that are unrecorded
  • family heirlooms
  • any irreplaceable document
