Infant with a Check and No Account

Our 10 month old got a check ($25) for Christmas. He does not yet have his own savings account. Can I deposit or cash it using my own checking account?

In many cases you could show your bank your child's social security card and your identification and they'd let you cash the check. It is a small amount.

You might consider though, opening a savings account with your child. Note we said with and not for. A Uniform Transfers to Minor Act (UTMA) account leaves the funds owned by your child, but managed by you. With $25 you may be able to avoid any fees on the account and start building a nice savings or college account. You can search on "UTMA" here in BankingQuestions for more information, such as this link to an MP3 (sound file) explanation.
