Where Do I Deposit a Joint Payee Check?

I have a check to deposit that is made out to my company name and my name. Can I deposit it in a savings account that has my name?

Before anyone endorses the check, we'd suggest you take it to your bank and ask them to look at it and tell you if you can deposit it to your personal account. We make that suggestion because banks make their own policy on this question, and we cannot make a blanket statement that every bank will handle it in the same way.

In general, if the company name and your name are connected by the word "OR" or separated only by a virgule (/), the check only requires one indorsement, and it can be yours as an individual. In that case, you should have no problem depositing the check to your personal account.

If the two names are connected with the word "AND" or an ampersand (&), the check will require an indorsement from the company AND one from you as an individual. If the company is a sole proprietorship, you'd indorse it something like "ABC Company by [your signature], proprietor" and then "[your signature], individually." If the company is a separate legal entity, such as an LLC, corporation or partnership, the check would be endorsed on behalf of the company by someone with that authority, then by you, but the most important thing to remember is to ask your bank how to proceed so that you don't find out you've endorsed the check and can't deposit it.
