How can I find out if someone has opened a bank account in my name?
There is no way for certain. If John Smith calls a bank and asks if there is an account in that name, the bank won't respond. They may well have a customer with that name, but that wouldn't mean it was yours. If the intent of the question is to determine if you have been a victim of identity theft, you'd have to provide more specific information such as your address and/or Social Security number. Calling every bank could be tedious.
Monitoring your credit reports is a better solution. While not all banks access a credit report when a deposit account is requested, many do. Use the free credit reporting services and stagger them so you request one every four months from each of the three national bureaus. Look at the inquiries and focus calls to them.
If you feel you may be the victim of identity thief, you should review the information on this subject on BankingQuestions.com, the FTC.gov website, and consider filing applicable reports with law enforcement and the credit bureaus. They can add some protections so that further damage can be reduced or eliminated.
