A few years ago I had a checking and savings account with direct deposit with Chase. I had the accounts in good standing for a while until I went looking for a part-time job. To make a long story short, I was contacted by an internet scammer offering me a job where he sent me money orders and asked me to deposit them to my account and keep a percentage and send him the difference. I was somewhat suspicious of the set up, so I brought the money orders to a local branch and asked the teller if she could verify that they were real. She told me the only way to do that would be to "send them out" not explaining that they would post them to my account and that if they weren't real I would end up with my account frozen etc.
Surprise! The money orders were fake, but here is the kicker: I did not pull any of the money out the bank because I did not even know or expect they would post the monies to my account, and so I did not owe the bank any money. They froze my accounts
anyway and sent my name to ChexSystems, which is of course keeping me from opening another account. I am very frustrated because none of the departments at Chase want to help me sort this out. Yes, I was stupid and ignorance is no defense, but I don't think I deserve to be treated like a criminal. I still have the emails sent by this fraudster. How can I get this matter cleared up?
You can only call different banks and inquire as to what they require of a new account. While it is not known what your ChexSystems report says, any bank that sees a risk in you that they do not want to take is free to say they will not open a relationship with you. Check with other banks and credit unions.
