I received a check from a company. I am to keep some of the money, and send the rest to another party. I deposited the check. Have I broken the law? The check has not cleared yet.
If you were not aware of the fact that this looks and smells like a scam, you're probably OK. However, you can be almost certain that the check you deposited is fraudulent. Based on similar scams, you "sent the rest to another party" using some form of money transfer system, such as Western Union or a bank wire transfer. If that's the case, be prepared for your bank to question you about repayment the minute the bogus check comes back. If you're prepared to pay up right away, your bank may not take any steps beyond collecting the money from you. It could, however, decide to close your account.
If you sent the rest of the money in the form of a check on your account, and that check hasn't yet been paid from your account, stop payment on it, and don't spend another cent of the funds you deposited. That will help you repay the funds when the check you deposited bounces.
