Workman Wants Check Reissued; but No Original

My husband had some work done under warranty about three years ago by a Samsung repairman. During the last week, this fellow has been calling incessantly, and saying that he found this "lost" check, which he supposedly never cashed. He is asking that my husband issue him a new one. My husband does not remember writing this guy a check, but has asked this person to mail him a copy of it to verify that it is indeed his. This seems super fishy, but I am not sure what authorities we should contact, if any. Has anyone heard of scam like this? I know that checks should expire after six months. My husband is trying to be fair about this, but also has a bad feeling. Any advice?

If your husband gave this guy a check three years ago and it hasn't yet been cashed, the check should still be outstanding in your monthly reconciliation of the account. Your husband has the right idea. He is under no obligation to send the alleged repairman anything unless the repairman can provide evidence he is actually holding a stale check. Ideally, the repairman should show your husband the actual check, not a copy, so that your husband can confirm that there are no bank endorsements on the back of it.
