A customer of mine ran out of checks. He took a check that was made out to a different vendor, crossed out the name and wrote my name on it. He wasn't the person who signed the check. Is it still good, or does it have to be initialed by the person who originally signed it?
Changing the payee on a check is an unauthorized alteration. It means that the check is no longer properly payable. If the alteration had been made by the drawer of the check, the check would have continued to be properly payable, but the paying bank would have been justified in refusing to pay it.
