I recently received a legitimate check for $2,500 from a consumer survey contest. The letter that was attached to it said that another $35,000 would be sent after the first check is deposited. Can this group access my information after I deposit the initial check?
When you deposit the initial check you will write your account number on it. Your bank will stamp the check, and it will go back to whomever wrote it to show it was paid, and yes, they will have your information. Because of the huge number of scams out there, you should ask yourself some questions. Did you win? Did you really enter this contest? Why are you now suspect, and what about reporting the winnings to the IRS? A legitimate contest would have to report the winnings and you will have to provide them with your Social Security number.
Before you give up any of this, research the contest company. If you won, you won, and you'll be paid. If they don't like any delays or questions, they are suspect.
