Won 2M - Gets Letter of Guarantee: What?

I entered an online lottery three months ago. I got notification that I won 2 million dollars. Instead of geting the money, the company sent me a bank guarantee letter with my name and a maturity of four months from now. I need to know how can I make sure that this is not a scam, and if not, can I open a U.S account with that amount of money? I am not a resident. If I can open that account, do I need to prove where that money came from or something like insurance?

Often these are scams. It would appear they want your bank account information before you can get the funds. A thief who has your account information can clean out your account. Ask yourself which is more likely, that you win the lottery, or become a victim?

Contact your states Attorney General, search the web for that company name and similar scams. Start your search here. Look at a sample of scams here, and don't give up your account information unless you are absolutely certain whom you are giving it to and for what. You might even consider opening a new account just for this. Tell your bank you don't want to allow any overdrafts in it, but be prepared that you could still have that account abused if this is a scam.
