I think that I may be a victom of a check scam. I received a check in my name from an insurance company, which said it was from an accident that I had in 2004. I cashed it, then someone called me wondering when I was going to send the money. What can I do?
Did you actually have an accident in 2004? If not, it seems fairly obvious that the insurance check is fraudulent. However, if you did have a covered accident, the fact that someone else apparently knew you received the check sounds very suspicious.
Do not spend any of the money from the insurance check until you have learned of the fate of the check. You should contact the purported issuing insurance company to see if it sent the check or not. If you have already spent some of the funds, and you learn that the check will be coming back as fraudulent, be prepared to repay your bank promptly.
