My seventeen year old son got scammed by a money order scheme. He cashed one money order, then deposited the other. He pulled the money the next day and wired it, thinking he was part of a Mystery Shopper program. I spoke to one branch near my work and they told me the SOP of the bank should have caught this at time of deposit, but it appears teller was new and didn't follow SOP. The branch he cashed these at didn't mention SOP. The amount was $1800. Is there anything I can do other than pay back the money? It was on his account.
There's certainly no guarantee that any bank's standard operating procedures (SOP) will catch this sort of scam every time. The bank was liable on its endorsement when the money orders came back. Your son's endorsement made him liable, as well.
It's possible that the laws of your state provide your son with some protection. Check with a local legal aid office to find out if his minority is any defense to liability on his endorsements.
