Woman Abuses Girl Scouts' Account

My wife is on a checking account (for Girl Scouts) with another woman, who has been floating and bouncing bad checks, putting the account in the negative by 4k dollars. Other than my wife's name on the account, she has had nothing to do with it. What can we do so that she is not the one held responsible for the funds, and how can she avoid criminal charges? What does the bank do to ensure it goes after the correct person, or does it not care and just goes after everyone, guilty or innocent?

You can be assured that the bank will start pursuing everyone related to the account once it decides there is a problem. Whether your wife is at risk of being pursued for the overdraft will depend on how the account was established. In many cases, such accounts are established with authorized signers who don't have personal liability. In other cases, the bank established the account in the names of the individuals involved.

If the Girl Scouts and/or the bank are being defrauded by the other woman on the account, your wife should consider contacting the Girl Scouts' regional office to give them a heads up. When getting involved with the deposit accounts of service and youth organizations, it is always wise to know as much as you can about the other individuals involved. As your question illustrates, honest people can get dragged into the troubles that are caused by others who are tempted to take unreasonable risks with the funds.
