You should be VERY WARY if you think you've received an email from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The federal banking regulatory agency recently sent out an alert about an email scam using its name. These emails ask recipients to register for a Secure Online Network (SON) code by clicking a "SON" link and providing personal financial information. If you receive one of these emails, do not click on any links in the email, and do not provide any personal information on a page that will appear if you do click the link.
Subject lines in the scam messages have been "Urgent Notification - Security Reminder," "Online Access Agreement Update," and "SON Registration." But you should be suspicious of any email appearing to come from the FDIC. The agency does not use email to contact consumers.
If you receive a suspicious email that appears to come from the FDIC, do not open it. Instead, forward it to alerts@fdic.gov.
