Scamming people has become a career for a growing segment of the population. With phone calls, letters and/or emails that tug at a person's heart or dangle a dream, they reel in victims who don't realize that not only will they not reap a financial windfall, they will unwittingly put their own money on the line and big losses will result.
A new website shows what's really going on behind the scenes: www.fakechecks.org. It exposes these con games for what they are with clever videos and fraud tests. Take the time to really look at the videos: they are clever, cute, even, but also very insidious. Any of the scenarios depicted could happen to you!
Just remember: if you didn't enter the lottery, you can't be a winner! There is no legitmate reason why anyone would send you a check or money order and ask you to wire money anywhere in return! If you received a notification in your email from someone telling you that the sender has inside information about any kind of monetary windfall coming your way, warning you not to tell anyone: do not keep it a secret! Notify your state's Attorney General immediately.
But it looks completely legit - even has my bank's logo on it...
It's not!
How would they get my name (email, phone or fax number)?
It's not difficult!
They told me they would deny everything if I told anyone...
If that doesn't send up a red flag for you, what will?!
