I received a cashier's check written on National City Bank of the Midwest, a Powerball check. Is this a scam?
It could be. As with any type of payment you receive, ask yourself if this is from a contest you entered, and if they want some fee in exchange for your accepting this.
If you are notified that you won a lottery in the U.K. and you are in the U.S with no ties to the U.K and not having visited there, it is unlikely you would have won. The same message applies here, and these scams either require you to pay some tax or access fee up front, of you'll receive a check and have to send them a part of it for one reason or another. The trick is, the check looks good, but it isn't, and by the time it flows back through the payment system to your bank, you will have sent that money off. Your bank will want it back from you. Remember, if it looks to good to be true, it probably is.
