What's a Stafford Student Loan?

I'm getting ready for the college application process, and I need to know more about student loans. I've heard a lot about Stafford Loans. Can you tell me more about them?

Federal Stafford Loans are fixed-rate, low interest loans available to undergraduate students who attend accredited schools at least half time. They are the most common source of college loans. They feature flexible repayment options, no prepayment penalty, and a six-month grace period after you graduate or stop attending school at least half time, before you have to start repaying the loan. No credit checks are required, and you can consolidate several loans into one when you start repaying.

Student Loan programs may change slightly from year to year. We recommend checking with your high school guidance office or the Financial Aid office at the school you plan to attend, for the most current information.
