What are the eligibility requirements for a Stafford Loan?
Here are the current requirements. Student Loan programs may change slightly from year to year. We recommend checking with your high school guidance office or the Financial Aid office at the school you plan to attend, for the most current information.
You must have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which you can find conveniently on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
For a subsidized Stafford loan (the government pays your interest for you), you must have financial need, as determined by your school.
You must be a U.S. citizen or national, a U.S. permanent resident, or an eligible non-citizen.
You must be enrolled or plan to enroll in school as at least a half-time student.
You must be accepted for enrollment or attend a school that participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program.
You must not be in default on any education loan or owe a refund on an education grant.
