Paying the Interest on a Stafford Loan

A friend of mine has a son in college. She said the government is paying the interest on his student loan. Is this a grant, or a loan?

This sounds like a subsidized Stafford loan. The government does pay the interest on these while your friend's son is still in school. Financial need has to exist for this to be approved. There are also unsubsidized loans where students pay all the interest. This student would either start paying intrest while he is in school, or it may be deferred until after graduation, when he should be employed and more able to handle the obligation.
