Getting Information About a Trust

My father had a living trust when he was alive. When my father was no longer mentally competent, my brother became the trustee.

My father has died, and recently my brother was killed in a car accident. How do I find out what bank accounts are in the trust? I have determined what real property is in the trust, but the LA County Real Estate Record Section employee that I spoke to could not tell me how to find out about bank accounts, or what department to contact. Can you help me or point me in a direction? When an account is placed in a trust, is it recorded somewhere like real estate is recorded when it's part of a trust?

There's no central recording procedure for accounts owned by trusts. To track down accounts, try to locate any statements or other correspondence about the accounts in your brother's records. If your father used an attorney in creating the trust, or your brother worked with an attorney to assume the trusteeship, the attorney's office may have a lead on where to find the accounts, and give you any needed help in assuming the trusteeship, if you will be doing so.
