If I start a Realty Trust, do I need to apply for a tax ID number or can I use my social security number?
Your best source for this information is the IRS itself. In general terms, if the trust is a "grantor trust" (the grantor maintains control and is able to revoke the trust at any time for any reason), the IRS allows the grantor's social security number to be used. However, most realty trusts with which I am familiar are not grantor trusts, and would be required by the IRS to obtain their own tax ID numbers.
