Car Dealership Pulling Credit Report

I was recently shopping for a new car, and I now find out that one of the car dealers I visited asked for a credit report on me. I didn't sign a car loan application there. Is that legal?

For the dealer to ask for a credit report, there only needs to be an application, and it doesn't have to be written. Perhpas you might have discussed financing with this dealer to the point that the dealer felt there was a request for credit. Since a shopper's recollection of events might differ from the dealer's, most dealers won't obtain a credit report without getting a signature on an application, but it's not a legal requirement.
